Everyday Makeup Tutorial

Happy Friday everyone! Very exciting day on Jemaroons today because, as you can already tell by the title, I have made my first ever makeup tutorial! The look is really simple, subtle and perfect for everyday wear - to school, work, or wherever. Enjoy the video. :)

Products Used:
Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua foundation in B20
Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch concealer in Nude
Collection Lasting Perfection concealer in 3 Medium
MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural in Medium
NARS Deep Throat blush
The Body Shop Honey Bronze Bronzing Powder in 3 Medium Matte
MAC Concrete e/s (for brows)
Maybelline Chai Latte quad
Covergirl Lashblast Fusion mascara
L'oreal Colour Caresse Lipstick in Sunset Angora

You may notice that I didn't use any eyeliner in this tutorial. That is just because I don't like eyeliner on me on a day to day basis. But I understand that it's a step that many of you cannot go without so if you do wear eyeliner daily, just insert that step while you are doing your eye makeup. :)

Current Loves No. 4

It's time for another favourites post, and there are quite a few new gems in this one so I'm excited to share them all with you! Here goes...

Rimmel Scandal-Eyes Nude eyeliner | I'm not big on eyeliner but since purchasing this I think I've used it nearly every day. I apply it right on my waterline and it works perfectly for brightening up my eyes. I prefer this to a stark white just because it's softer and more natural but still gives the same effect. This Rimmel one in particular has made it onto my favourites list because it stays put all day and it's super affordable coming from the drugstore! Win win!

Ribbon hair ties | I was so skeptical about ribbon hair ties at first but after trying one from Sephora I have become a total convert! They come in such cute colours and are so comfortable to wear. No pinching or snagging of the hair, and you don't get that awful ponytail ridge when you take it off. A ton of Etsy sellers are selling these for much cheaper than the name brands like Twistband (no offense, Twistband, but yours are just so darn expensive!) so I would recommend purchasing them from there.

Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau So Fresh EDT | This perfume was on my last Current Loves post and since then I have purchased the full-sized bottle of it which is massive! The bottle is perfect and the scent is just so lovely and feminine but not overpowering. It may very well become my signature scent.

MAC Fleur Power | A pretty corally pink blush that really makes you look rejuvenated and alive. This blush is one of my favourites because it's easy to wear and it goes with everything! It doesn't have any shimmer or glitter so it definitely gives a nice natural-looking flush.

L'oreal Sunset Angora | I've only had this product for a couple of weeks but I'm hooked. I just did a post on these L'oreal lipsticks and rambled about how much I love them so if you want to read more you can check that post out. This lovely peachy coral is my favourite of the bunch and just like the rest of them, it glides on like butter and is so comfortable to wear. I've been reaching for this everyday because it's just the perfect lip colour for daily use.

Dove Nourishing Oil Care Detangler | I don't know how I lived so long without this product in my life because it is literally magic for your hair. I give my hair a generous spritzing of this post-shower and it just makes combing out my hair so much easier! It also smells heavenly and that can't hurt, right? I'm going to be doing a post on hair detanglers soon so I'll elaborate more on there!

Let's Talk Life #2

It's time for another chatty post about what I've been up to lately!

Since getting back from the States, most of my days have been devoted to crossing more things off my 26 Days of Summer bucket list. If you still don't know what that is, you can read more about it here. Progress has been slow and steady but I'm really hoping to pick up the pace in the next couple of weeks. I'm more than halfway through the 26 days so the pressure is on! ;)

Part of the bucket list is a blogging challenge I created for myself where I blog every other day for the duration of my 26 days of summer. I have loved delivering more content to you guys and hope you've been liking the posts so far! If you need to catch up I've made the tag 26DoS available on the left sidebar - just click and it will take you to all the posts I've written. 9 down, 4 to go!

I've also been in the kitchen a lot this past week, experimenting with delicious-sounding recipes! I hit the jackpot on this awesome spaghetti recipe that my family loves but I'll share more on that in the recap post at the end of 26DoS. I also tried (and succeeded if I do say so myself!) in making these yummy cheesy kale chips with my sister, as well as some healthy, vegan peanut butter and banana ice cream.

While I've made some efforts to eat mostly healthy and homemade, summer doesn't always encourage it. Delicious rainbow breakfasts (Trix cereal) and always-satsifying bubble milk teas are two things I've been enjoying indulging in, alone or with company.

I have also spent some time reading, 12 hours to be exact. It took me all of 12 hours to devour this heartbreakingly beautiful novel by John Green called The Fault in Our Stars. It has humour, pain, love, and joy all in one book and it's one of the most honest things I've read in a while. Absolutely loved it and would highly recommend! I still have Insurgent on my list to read this summer and I am super excited for that one because I loveddddd Divergent! Will keep you updated.

I have so far been good with posting daily OOTDs and FOTDs on Instagram, though I feel that the latter may have been pointless since I realized just a few days into doing it that my choice of makeup products doesn't change much on a day to day basis. Most of my FOTDs look the same and for that I apologize! Still I hope you've liked seeing more of my personal style, through my outfits and faces. Below are some of my favourites:

Most recently...
I just got back from a weekend at my friend's cottage yesterday evening and it was the most fun and relaxing experience yet this summer. Mostly we relaxed and caught up on each others' lives, but when we weren't doing that we were cooking delicious (but unhealthy haha!) meals or playing tons of Dutch Blitz (most amazing game ever, btw). On Sunday we took a ride on her boat and popped into town for some hamburger buns and ice cream which was lovely, and since the weather wasn't good enough for a swim we just jumped into the lake once before leaving for home.

I can't believe classes start next week. I definitely haven't had enough summer yet so I'm going to spend the next week and a half basking in the sun, reading, hanging out, and soaking up all the summer I can get! What have you guys been up to?

The Clarisonic Mia

I know, I know - as if you haven't heard enough about the Clarisonic. If you've already made up your mind about this skin gizmo then this may not be very useful for you but personally I enjoy reading numerous reviews before I decide to go out and buy something as expensive as the Clarisonic. This review has taken so long to get out there because I really want to make sure my opinion is solid. I've had my Clarisonic for just about a year now so I've really had time to use it and test it out and I think I'm ready to make proper judgments about it. I debated a lot about whether to write a post or film a video because there is a lot of information to get across; in the end I decided on a post but divided it into sections so it's not too overwhelming. If you're really considering purchasing a Clarisonic, get comfortable because this should be really helpful! :)

The Product: Specifications
  • I would describe the Clarisonic much like everyone else has described it in the past: a hefty, oversized toothbrush for your face. It has a nice chunky handle with an on/off button at the front, and then a round brush head that pulses and vibrates as it cleanses your face.
  • The default brush head is the sensitive one, but Clarisonic has made a few different brush heads to suit different needs so be sure to check them all out to see what's best for you.
  • The Clarisonic Mia comes in a wide variety of colours and patterns so there is sure to be one for everyone. The one I own is in the prettiest light blue!
  • In terms of battery life, a fully charged Clarisonic will last 20 minutes which is equivalent to 20 uses (1 minute per use).
  • The Clarisonic is fully waterproof which means you can take this in the shower without worrying about zapping yourself or ruining the device.
  • There is only one speed setting on this model of the Clarisonic but it doesn't bother me much. I don't think you need another speed setting.
  • Lastly, it's worth mentioning that if you order off the Clarisonic website you do have the option of having something printed on the back of your device, like a name or a message.

The Product: Function

Just a quick run through of how I use my Clarisonic! I start off by wetting my face and running the brush under some warm water. I squeeze off any excess water from the brush head before applying a quarter-size amount of my cleanser onto the center of the brush head then sort of roughly spreading it through. Now for the exciting part - I press button right below the brush head and place the Clarisonic lightly on my face. The device vibrates for 60-seconds so I divide that time between the parts of my face, taking a bit more time to do my nose and chin. I also take it down to my neck if I have any extra time after I've covered my entire face. The Clarisonic will stop automatically after 60 seconds, after which I rinse the brush head under water to get all the soap out, then I wash my face. Tada!

When you see a blinking green light at the back of your Clarisonic this means that it needs to be charged. The charger and the Clarisonic are magnetic so there are no ports or plugs to worry about (besides the one you plug into the wall to power the charger!). Charging can take a full day so make sure you do it on a day when you won't be using your Clarisonic. Since it is a very deep cleansing tool I don't recommend anyone use it every single day as it can eventually dry your skin out. 2-3 days a week in the evening is perfect to just renew your skin and make sure all that makeup, dirt and grime is off of your face.

Results

Before I talk about my thoughts, I should first mention what my skin was like before. I have combination skin - my cheeks and forehead are normal, but my nose and chin get oily throughout the day. I don't get many spots but they come one after another which is frustrating because it means I never have a totally good skin day. As a result, I had pretty bad acne scarring - so bad that even when I didn't have a spot my skin would look splotchy and horrible. I also had clogged and enlarged pores around my nose and chin, and my skin was uneven in tone and texture. In general, it was lackluster and dull.

For the first month and half of using the Clarisonic I did experience a purging phase, which is when your skin spits out all the dirt and nasties it has been storing resulting in breakouts. I had a nearly unbearable purging phase with horrible breakouts even in places I don't usually break out in! Makeup could barely salvage it.

But after the purging, I noticed results that I was really happy with. It was difficult to trust that the Clarisonic would do me good at first, but you do really have to give it some time to do its job. Here are my honest thoughts on my personal experience:
  • Improved skin texture and tone
  • Shrunken but not invisible pores - which is a realistic expectation
  • It did not get rid of spots completely but it did make them less severe, less frequent, and more quickly removed
  • It doesn't really clear out blackheads, whiteheads, oil, sebum, or anything stuck in your pores so I would definitely recommend using a clay mask or some sort of treatment if that is a real problem for you
  • Lightened acne scars
  • Massages the face and brings blood to the surface
  • Brighter-looking skin

Summary

Overall I'm really happy with what it's done for my skin and I don't regret purchasing it! I think initially my expectations of it were just too high, from hearing everyone's raves, so I didn't find it mind-blowing or revolutionary by any means. I think I was waiting for some moment of clarity or something, haha! But after a certain amount of time using it, I've come to the conclusion that it's a really amazing tool to have to wash your skin with and it's definitely improved my skin a lot from what it was like before. I still have to be realistic and accept that there isn't really anything out there that will truly get you from bad skin to amazing skin. It's a process that involves a really good, solid skincare routine but also good eating habits!

USA Haul

A trip to the USA inevitably means a heck of a lot of shopping, only really because everything is so much cheaper over there! I'm actually quite proud of myself because I spent a lot less this year compared to last year. I don't know if I even want to link you over to the haul post I did last year, but it was back when I wasn't so good at composing photos. I took a group photo of all my purchases then and it looked like I had bought an entire store..... Yikes.

Before I get started I just want to put something out there because I know posts like this can be misunderstood. I want you all to know that the amount of stuff I purchased during this trip is by no means an indication of my regular spending habits. I started saving up for this trip in April, not spending on any makeup, clothing, or any other luxury purchases of any kind. I wanted to save as much money as I could so that I could spend it in the US where I could purchase things for cheaper. End disclaimer.

Now for the fun bit, haul time!

USA Trip | Summer 2013

If you don't follow me on Instagram or Twitter, or haven't read my recent blog posts this will be news to you. But if not then you'll know that for the past week I was in the USA taking a vacation with my family. I had such an incredible time, it's hard to put into words, but it was exhausting but in a good way if that makes sense. My brother couldn't come along for the trip so we 'adopted' two of these silly goons instead (family friends), and so this trip's crew consisted of myself, my sister Joy, Dave, and Phil.....plus my parents. I introduced them here because you'll be seeing them a lot in my photos!

Day 1: We left Canada on the morning of my sister's birthday and drove nine hours to New Jersey where we have family living there. The road trip took most of the day so by the time we arrived it was just about time for my sister's birthday dinner party.

Day 2: We made a day trip out to Atlantic City, NJ to take a stroll down the boardwalk, have some boardwalk food and chill out on the beach. The food was suuuuuperb and the boardwalk was gorgeous, but the beach was disappointing. Sun, sand, and sea day.

Day 3: A full day of shopping at the Woodbury Common Premium Outlets.

Day 4: More shopping at Bergen Outlet Mall and Westfield Garden State Plaza.

Day 5: The trip wouldn't be complete without a day spent in Manhattan - shopped in SoHo, watched Chicago on Broadway, walked around Times Square. Chicago was absolutely brilliant and hilarious, I loved it!

Day 6: Drove to a mall in Delaware to shop some more (we had to take advantage of no tax!), then continued the drive to Baltimore, Maryland to meet up with some of my parents' friends. We had the most delicious dinner at Bo Brooks and I learned how to pick crabs! After dinner they toured us around Johns Hopkins and it was such a dream come true for me. If you don't know why that is, I am a full-time Kinesiology student and a med hopeful!

Day 7: The youngins (Joy, Dave, Phil, myself) decided to head to Manhattan again to do more sightseeing and just general touristy things. We made it to the famous food trucks, Grand Central Station, Central Park, SoHo, and Times Square!

Day 8: Homebound! But had to stop by Friendly's for some last minute validated-by-vacation pigging out!!!
Here is a photo diary of my time away.

Taking a stroll on the boardwalk
The most delicious strawberry lemonade I've ever had
Funnel cake!
Probably my favourite OOTD of the trip!
At Times Square
Penne Sorrentina at Grotta Azzurra
'Chicago' at the Ambassador Theatre
Shopping at Muji
Pens at Muji
Crab dinner at Bo Brooks, Baltimore, MD
At Johns Hopkins
About to chomp on some Philly cheese steaks from Phil's Steaks food truck
Dave's souvlaki from Souvlaki GR food truck
Panorama of Grand Central Station
A view from Central Park
The windows of Saks Fifth Avenue
Sundae time at Friendly's

I love holidays and vacations but after a while I do start to miss my own bed, so after a week of traipsing around the USA and absorbing the culture (and doing tons of shopping!) I'm happy to be back home in the suburbs. Hope you enjoyed my photo diary of my summer USA trip! :)

Shoutouts to: Phil, Dave, and my sister Joy - thanks for being the best company on this adventure of a vacation. And my dad - thanks for taking some of the photos that I used for this photo diary post!

Handbag Beauty

I've been on vacation in the US for about a week now, traveling to different cities and states and just having the best time. But fun sometimes also means extremely busy. When on vacation I will usually stick to one small, easy to carry handbag with just the must haves so that it doesn't weigh me down on long days out on foot sightseeing and exploring. At the moment I carry a gray Michael Kors crossbody bag everywhere which is just perfect for the job!

I thought I'd talk about my handbag beauty essentials on today's blog post. Here are the beauty-related things that I've had in my handbag and found super useful this week!

Purse-size Narciso Rodriguez 'For Her' EDT
Sometimes when you're in a not-so-good area of town or on the subway getting cozy with strangers, a little freshening up can make a huge difference. A small vial of your fave perfume is good to take with you to give yourself a pick me up!

Purse-size Goody brush
I don't know about you but it doesn't matter how smoothed and combed my hair is when I leave the house; a few hours later my head is tangle central. This is a must for straightening things out!

L'oreal Colour Caresse Lipstick in Sunset Angora
A girl's handbag isn't complete without lip product(s)! I'm actually really proud of myself for having just one. I like to take a universal shade that is really easy to apply so I can just slap it on without a mirror.

Nail clipper
This may seem like a weird one but it comes in so handy for broken fingernails or peeling nails. You never know! I prefer this to a nail file because it's more precise.

L'occitane Fleurs Merveilleuses hand cream
One of my biggest pet peeves is washing my hands in public washrooms with industrial grade soap and having the chalkiest, driest hands after. I absolutely always have hand cream on me to keep them moisturized!

If you're about to go on a sightseeing vacation soon, I hope you find this helpful! There are definitely other things that could be added to the list, but I like to keep mine short and sweet. You don't want to be lugging your entire house around when you're constantly on the go.

PS. I just made the label '26DoS' available on the left sidebar if you'd like a quick and easy way of finding all the blog posts I've posted so far for my 26 Days of Summer blogging challenge. I'd love it if you read them all and left your thoughts in the comments section! All right, that's all for today and I will see you in two days! x

The Best of Summer: an edit

I know it is now mid-August and very well into summer, but hopefully you'll all still like today's post which is going to be my summer edit. I'm going to be talking about all of my favourites for the season which will include some old time loves and some newbies. I've got beauty as well as fashion bits, so kick back with your tall glass of ice cold iced tea and read on. :)

Makeup bits first. When I think of changing up my makeup in the summer I immediately think of bright colours, and blushes and lip products. Cheeks and lips are the easiest to experiment with without looking too crazy out there, so you'll see I've got a lot of picks from those categories!

  1. Topshop cream blush in Morning Dew | Cream blushes are totally appropriate for the summer because they just blend into the skin and give a really nice, natural look. This bright, almost neon pink (with a smidgeon of coral!) one from Topshop is daunting in the compact, but it looks perfectly summery and fresh blended onto the cheekbones.
  2. Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Rendezvous | These balm stains are long-time favourites of mine, and I actually reviewed them on this blog sometime last year. Rendezvous is an amazing bright orange that is just so easy to wear because of the smooth balm consistency.
  3. Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Sweetheart | Another one of these balm stains makes an appearance on my top summer products list. Sweetheart is the hot pink that suits all skin tones! Again easy to apply and easy to wear because of this product's great formulation. Just be sure to take some lip balm to top up on shine whenever the product starts to wear off.
  4. L'oreal Infallible Eyeshadow in Amber Rush | One of two eyeshadows to make the cut is this gorgeous frosty bronze loose powder eyeshadow. This is a recent addition to my makeup collection but I just love the rich, full-on colour. These shadows are very popular in the beauty community because it's not common to find a great quality, pigmented loose shadow for such a good, low price.
  5. MAC Fleur Power blush | This is my perfect summer blush, the blush you can wear with anything and everything this season! It's pink, coral, peach - bright, but not too bright. Apply with a light hand because this blush is super pigmented!
  6. Maybelline Color Tattoo in Bad to the Bronze | Again, like the loose shadow, it's really hard to find good quality cream shadows that are reasonably priced. This bronze one from Maybelline looks amazing on the lids especially with a tan. It just adds some warmth and depth to the eyes while still staying neutral.
  7. Essie Tart Deco | Most perfect pedicure colour. I can't get enough!
  8. OPI Dutch Tulips | This bright hot pink shade is one of my favourites because of its amazing pigmentation. One coat is all you need!
  9. L'oreal Colour Riche Caresse Lipstick in Sunset Angora | Love these lip products more than the Revlon Lip Butters, and this pretty coral colour is the shade for you if you want something summery but not too bright and neon.
  10. The Body Shop Honey Bronzer in 03 Medium Matte | Of course I had to stick a bronzer in because summer is all about getting our tan on. This bronzer is pretty natural but that's just the way I like it! Great for contouring too because it's matte.
  11. MAC Chatterbox lipstick | This lip pick is great if you've just started wearing bright lipsticks because it's bright but not outrageously so. The pinkish coral is neither too cool nor too warm, so I reckon it would suit a lot of skin tones!
  12. Sleek blush in Life's a Peach | For the daredevils out there, I've got something for you. This blush will be totally up your alley. Life's a Peach is flat out, bright neon orange. Wowoweeeee.

Now for my fashion picks! I've been really enjoying this summer's styles and fashions so I'm pretty excited to share my favourites with you.

  1. Crop tops | So many styles, prints, designs, and fits to choose from! Loose-fitting crop tops have been in style for a while but I'm so glad more brands have been coming out with the tighter-fitting ones because they are super cute and fresh and just different. A different way of baring just a bit. I only wear crop tops with high-waisted bottom pieces, otherwise I think it can be a little too much.
  2. High-waisted shorts | To pair with all your cute crop tops, a good pair of high-waisted denim shorts. This is a closet staple! I can't live without mine, I wear them all the time!
  3. Aldo sandals | I bought these last year ON SALE and wore them to death then, and they're still one of my favourite pairs of sandals. The colour and style is just so easy to wear and pair. I find that these sandals go with everything. They're probably no longer available but Aldo is always coming out with great styles for equally great prices.
  4. Baseball caps | My new obsession, could you say? I only have one and don't think I'd need many more but I just think baseball caps are so chic when worn with something a bit dressier or cuter. (See yesterday's OOTD! ;) ) I intended to buy one in a more neutral colour like gray, but when I spotted this lavender one at Lululemon I tried it on just for kicks and I guess you could say I fell in love. There was a gray one there as well and I think it was just too close to my hair colour to really pop. The lavender one was pretty and bright and I loved the way it looked on. I also figured since it is from Lulu I could wear it for outdoor runs when it's sunny out since I've always had the problem of not having appropriate sunnies for running.
